Disposals fail in a predictable order and the noise it makes tells you most of what you need to know. Humming with no rotation is a jam. Silence is electrical. Water underneath is a seal or a connection.
Before anything else: never put a hand into a disposal, and make sure the power is off at the switch and the breaker before anyone works on one.
What the symptom means
- Hums but does not turn: the impeller is jammed, and running it in that state burns out the motor
- Completely silent: tripped internal reset, a breaker, the switch, or a failed motor
- Leaking from the top: the sink flange seal
- Leaking from the side: the dishwasher hose or the discharge connection
- Leaking from the bottom: the internal seal has gone and the unit is replaced, not repaired
- Very loud metallic rattling: something foreign in the chamber
- Drains slowly: the problem is usually the drain line, not the disposal
Why leaking from the bottom is terminal
A disposal leaking from the base has failed internally, at the seal between the grinding chamber and the motor. Water is reaching the motor. There is no sensible repair for that and it is replaced.
Leaks from the top or the sides, by contrast, are usually just a seal or a connection and are straightforward.
What kills them here
The usual suspects are fibrous waste like celery and onion skins, starchy volume like pasta and rice that swells, coffee grounds that pack down, and grease that solidifies in the line below.
Grease is the one that matters most, because the damage is downstream: the disposal is fine and the kitchen line is coated. That is a jetting job rather than a disposal job.
