Softener stopped softening? Most causes are repairable and cheaper than replacing.
When hard water symptoms come back, people usually assume the softener is finished. Often it is not. The most common causes are a salt bridge, a control head setting, a fouled injector or a stuck valve, and all of them are repairs rather than replacements.

Signs it has stopped working
- Scale and spots returning on fixtures, glassware and shower doors

The usual culprits
A salt bridge is a hard crust of salt that forms across the brine tank with an empty space underneath. The tank looks full, but no brine is being drawn, so the resin never regenerates. It is probably the single most common cause of a softener that has quietly stopped working.
A salt mush at the bottom of the tank does the same job differently, clogging the draw.
Other frequent findings are a failed or mis-set control head, a fouled venturi injector, a stuck rotary valve, a leaking bypass, a blocked drain line, and a resin bed that is genuinely worn out or fouled with iron.
Resin has a service life
Resin does not last forever, and Las Vegas conditions are not gentle on it.

Repair or replace
Valves, injectors, control heads and seals are all serviceable parts, and on a unit under about ten years old a repair is usually the better value.
Where the resin bed is exhausted on an older unit, and especially where the tank or control head is obsolete and parts are hard to source, replacement starts to win. A plumber will tell you which side of that line you are on.

Frequently asked questions
My salt tank is full but water is hard again. Why?
That is the classic salt bridge. The salt has crusted into a solid arch with a void beneath it, so the unit cannot draw brine. It looks like a full tank and behaves like an empty one.
Do you repair every brand?

How much salt should it use?
It varies with household size, hardness and unit settings, but a typical valley family unit uses on the order of a bag every four to six weeks. Using far more or far less than usual is a sign something is off.
Why is my water salty?
Usually a regeneration cycle problem: a stuck valve, a blocked drain line or a control setting sending brine into service water instead of down the drain. It is worth getting looked at rather than living with.
