The failure mode of a neglected water softener is that nobody notices. It stops regenerating properly, hard water comes back gradually, and by the time the shower door is crusted over the water heater has been scaling for months.

What you can do between services
Keep the salt level above roughly one third of the tank and below a couple of inches from the top. Overfilling is one of the main causes of bridging.
Use a clean salt: pellets or solar salt rather than the cheapest rock salt, which carries more insoluble material that ends up as mush in the bottom of the tank.
Look in the tank once a month. Push a broom handle gently into the salt: if it hits a hard crust with space beneath, that is a bridge and it needs breaking up.
Watch for the symptoms coming back. Spots on glassware and soap not lathering are the early warnings, well before the crust on the fixtures.
