It is worth being precise about which problem you are solving, because a filter that is excellent at one is often useless at another.
The main types
Sediment filters catch grit, sand and particulate. They are cheap, they are usually the first stage in a staged system, and they protect everything downstream.
Carbon filters, whether granular or block, reduce chlorine, taste and odour. Valley water is disinfected, so this is the filter that makes the most noticeable difference to how water tastes at the tap.
Reverse osmosis at the point of use produces the highest quality drinking water of the common options, with its own tap at the sink.
UV treatment addresses microbiological concerns. It is far more relevant on a private well than on treated municipal supply.
Whole home or point of use
Whole home filtration treats everything: showers, laundry, every tap. It is the right answer when the complaint is chlorine smell in the shower or you want the protection everywhere.
Point of use treats one tap. It is dramatically cheaper for the specific goal of better drinking and cooking water, and RO is only practical this way.
A common and sensible valley setup is a softener on the main for scale, plus RO under the kitchen sink for drinking.
Filters need changing
Every filter has a service interval, and a neglected filter is worse than no filter: flow drops, and a loaded cartridge stops doing its job. Note the cartridge sizes and the interval when it is installed, and diarise it.
RO membranes last considerably longer than the pre-filters around them, but the pre-filters are what protect the membrane, so skipping those is how an RO system dies early.

Frequently asked questions
Will a filter soften my water?
No. Standard carbon and sediment filtration does not remove calcium and magnesium. Only ion exchange softening removes hardness.
Is reverse osmosis worth it?
For drinking and cooking water, many people find it clearly worthwhile. It is a point of use system, so think of it as an upgrade to one tap rather than a whole house solution.
How often do cartridges need changing?
It depends on the cartridge and your usage, commonly somewhere between six and twelve months for sediment and carbon, with RO membranes lasting years. Whoever installs it should give you the specific intervals for your unit.
