Faucets in this valley wear out faster than the manufacturer intended, and the reason is the water. Scale builds on cartridge seals and valve stems until the handle stiffens, the drip starts and the aerator clogs.

Most of it is repairable. The question is whether the parts are still available for that model.

Common problems

• A constant drip from the spout, usually a worn or scaled cartridge
• A leak at the base of the faucet, usually O-rings
• A handle that has become stiff or gritty to turn
• Weak flow from one tap, very often just a clogged aerator
• A leak under the sink at the supply connection or the angle stop

Repair or replace

Cartridges, O-rings and aerators are inexpensive and a repair is usually the right answer on a decent quality faucet.

Replacement wins when the finish is failing, the body is corroded, parts are discontinued, or the faucet was a budget unit to begin with. On a cheap faucet the labour to repair it can exceed the cost of a better one.

While the cabinet is open

Anyone replacing a faucet is already under the sink with the water off, which makes it the cheapest possible moment to replace the angle stops as well.

Given how hard the water is here and how routinely those valves seize, it is worth asking about. It is a small addition at the time and a significant nuisance avoided later.
