How to choose a plumber in Las Vegas

Before plumbing work starts, ask for the Nevada contractor license and look it up. That is true of Punctual Plumber Pros and it is true of anyone else you call.

Two minutes of checking prevents the great majority of bad experiences in this trade.

Check the license yourself

This is free, it takes about two minutes, and it is the single highest-value thing on this page.

• A plumbing contractor in Nevada holds a Nevada State Contractors Board C-1 license, plumbing and heating, with sub classifications for the specific work. (Nevada State Contractors Board)
• Anyone can check a Nevada contractor license free on the Nevada State Contractors Board license search, by license number, company name or principal, and see the classifications it holds and whether it is active. (Nevada State Contractors Board, license search)

Ask these before work starts

• What is your Nevada contractor license number? Then look it up rather than taking the number on faith.
• Is the price a flat rate for the job or hourly, and what is included?
• Will there be a diagnostic or trip charge, and is it credited against the work if I go ahead?
• Who pulls the permit, if this job needs one?
• What is the warranty on parts and, separately, on labor?
• Will I get it in writing before you start?
• Are you insured for work in my home?

Warning signs

• Pressure to decide immediately, or a price that expires today. Real plumbing quotes do not evaporate.
• No written estimate before work begins.
• A significantly lower price than everyone else, which usually means something is excluded. Ask what.
• A large deposit demanded up front on a routine repair.
• Reluctance to give a license number, or a number that does not check out.
• Recommending a full replacement without diagnosing first. Nobody should quote a sewer line replacement without putting a camera in the line.
• An in-home sales presentation for a water treatment system that runs an hour and ends with a discount that only applies right now.
• Cash only, no invoice, no paperwork.

Insist on diagnosis before big money

On any expensive job, the diagnosis should come before the quote and you should be shown the evidence. For a sewer line that means camera footage. For a slab leak it means a located leak, not an area. For a softener it means a hardness figure and a sizing calculation.

If someone cannot show you why the expensive thing is necessary, you are being asked to buy a conclusion rather than a diagnosis.
