Ask these before work starts

• What is your Nevada contractor licence number? Then look it up rather than taking the number on faith.
• Is the price a flat rate for the job or hourly, and what is included?
• Will there be a diagnostic or trip charge, and is it credited against the work if I go ahead?
• Who pulls the permit, if this job needs one?
• What is the warranty on parts and, separately, on labour?
• Will I get it in writing before you start?
• Are you insured for work in my home?

Warning signs

• Pressure to decide immediately, or a price that expires today. Real plumbing quotes do not evaporate.
• No written estimate before work begins.
• A significantly lower price than everyone else, which usually means something is excluded. Ask what.
• A large deposit demanded up front on a routine repair.
• Reluctance to give a licence number, or a number that does not check out.
• Recommending a full replacement without diagnosing first. Nobody should quote a sewer line replacement without putting a camera in the line.
• An in-home sales presentation for a water treatment system that runs an hour and ends with a discount that only applies right now.
• Cash only, no invoice, no paperwork.

Insist on diagnosis before big money

On any expensive job, the diagnosis should come before the quote and you should be shown the evidence. For a sewer line that means camera footage. For a slab leak it means a located leak, not an area. For a softener it means a hardness figure and a sizing calculation.

If someone cannot show you why the expensive thing is necessary, you are being asked to buy a conclusion rather than a diagnosis.
