Repiping replaces the water supply lines throughout a home. It is the answer when the pipe material itself has failed rather than one section of it, and it ends the cycle of repeated leaks and repeated drywall repairs.

It is a significant job and nobody should be talked into it casually. The case for it is arithmetic: add up what the last few leaks cost, including the damage, and compare it to doing it once.

When a repipe is genuinely the right call

• Galvanised steel supply pipe, which corrodes closed from the inside
• Polybutylene, which fails unpredictably and is generally uninsurable
• Repeated pinhole leaks in copper across different parts of the house
• Water pressure that has dropped as pipes have scaled and corroded closed
• Discoloured or rusty water coming from the supply rather than the heater
• A second or third slab leak in the same system

PEX or copper

Both are legitimate. PEX is flexible, needs far fewer fittings, installs faster with less drywall opened, tolerates minor freezing better and costs less. Copper is rigid, has a very long track record, and some owners simply prefer it.

In valley homes PEX is the more common repipe material now, largely because the reduced wall damage is a real saving on a slab home where lines get rerouted overhead.

What the job looks like

A typical single family repipe runs a few days. New lines are usually routed through the attic and down inside walls, which means controlled drywall openings at each drop, then patching and texture afterwards.

Ask any quote whether drywall repair and texture matching are included or excluded. It is the single most common source of surprise on a repipe bill.

A residential repipe requires a permit and inspection.
